Getting to and from Hunmanby, helpful hints on buying cheaper rail tickets:
This information is for guidance, many cheap fares can be withdawn or altered at short notice, We hope it helps
a few to find a cheaper ticket, that enables a few less road journeys. Prices were last checked Summer 2008.
Though Hunmanby railway station is unstaffed there are ways of purchasing cheaper
train tickets by booking in advance either over the internet, through a rail appointed travel agent, or at a staffed station
the nearerst to Hunmanby being Scarborough. While booking in advance does commit you to travelling on a certain train, on
a certain date, it does include reserved seats on the trains where seat reservations are possible.
While Northern Rail (who operate
the local train service) do not generally offer cheaper tickets for advance booking most long distance train operators do,
many also offer highly discounted through tickets to and from Hunmanby.
As a rough guide good value tickets can be bought where parts of
your rail journey uses the 'Cross Country' 'East Midland Trains'or 'National Express East Coast'
networks ie cheap singles are on offer to Derby (but not Sheffield) A good site to use to book on line is with
Nationalexpresseastcoast as many of their own fares offer a 10% discount, they don't charge a booking fee, and the tickets
are posted to your home at no extra charge! We find it easy to use and the optional extras such as being able to suggest
a less direct route. (Ie Birmingham New Street to Hunmanby via Manchester Piccadilly, or even Rochdale! can sometimes
give a slighly longer journey at a better price!) www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com
Examples of best value single tickets to and from Boston railway station to
Hunmanby railway station £8.90 Nottingham railway station to Hunmanby railway station £8.90 Peterborough
railway station to Hunmanby railway station £8.90 Bury St Edmunds to Hunmanby railway station £10.70 Ipswich
railway station to Hunmanby railway station £11.15 Glasgow railway station to Hunmanby railway station £12 (all prices includes the 10% discount for booking on line)
For destinations that
use the Cross Country Network, the 'price simplification' in May 2008 has seen it much harder to purchase cheaper
discounted tickets, with some good value fares rising ie Hunmanby to Telford which was £8 has risen to £13.50
each way. A helpful tip here is try and book as earlier as possible! But it is not just larger destinations
that good value single tickets can be purchased to or from Here are a few ‘one way’ prices:
Spondon railway station, Long Eaton railway station, Beeston railway station to or from Hunmanby
railway station all £9 single
Stratford-upon-Avon railway station, Stourbridge
Town railway station, Four Oaks railway station to Hunmanby railway station, Nuneaton railway station to or from Hunmanby
railway station all £11single
Birmingham New Street railway station to or from Hunmanby railway station £11
single. Using a website like www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com offers the useful option of selecting a different route some trains via Manchester
Piccadilly are also £11 each way it may be a slightly longer journey but their you could find a cheaper fare
that way!
Aberystwyth railway station to or from Hunmanby railway staton £20 single
Tenby railway station to or from Hunmanby railway station £23.50 single
Penzance railway station
to or from Hunmanby railway station £27 single
Some railway companies offer very good advance purchase
tickets for travel only on their own train services. Locally Transpennine Express www.tpexpress.co.uk It may be worth looking for cheap fares on their core route and purchasing a separate ticket for the remaining journey.
This may be helpful if part of your journey happens to fall when there are restrictions that prevent the purchase of cheap
day return or saver tickets. Their nearest station to Hunmanby is Seamer. The company offer very good rates on most trains
booked in advance for example Manchester Piccadilly to Seamer can be as little as £12 each way Leeds
to Seamer from as little as £7 each way Liverpool to Seamer from as little as £15 each way.
A
Day return from Hunmanby to Seamer is £4.10 (10p cheaper in you avoid the 08.06 service Monday to Friday) A Saver
return is £5.70 If you tried to book the cheapest ticket from Hunmanby to Liverpool it would be £54.40.
(A helpful hint is some cheap advance tickets to some Trans Pennine stations are available from by looking up
Scarborough instead of Seamer, like Barrow, Oxenholme and Windermere)
As a general guide, you
can normally book up to 12 weeks in advance and the earlier a booking is made the more likelihood of cheaper tickets on a
range of services being available (though Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays often have limited cheap tickets available.)
WHY FLY WHEN YOU CAN ENJOY THE SCENERY FROM A TRAIN WINDOW? If you like travelling
by train and boat what about a 'Coast to Coast, 5 Countries Scenic Circular Rail and Boat Tour?' (England, Scotland,
Northern Ireland, The Irish Repulic and Wales) The railway companies and ferry operators offer a great ticket to any station
in the Republic and Northern Ireland. Locally, a great place to purchase it is Scarborough Railway Station Travel
Centre (very helpful staff) Even from a rural branch line such as the Scarborough-Hull line its amazing what journeys are
possible. Belfast is a great destination, with the amazing Antrim coast.
To find out basic details try the National
Rail Enquiry Site, www.nationalrail.co.uk some rail web sites don't have travel information across the Irish Sea. Personally (try and avoid travelling on Sunday)
Though in Northern Ireland if you are using the railway network Sunday travel offers unlimited rail travel for £5.
A great way is usually the 09.17 train from Hunmanby, changing at Seamer, York, Newcastle and Stranraer with the boat crossing
and coach link arriving in Belfast Central at 22.00. This depending on the time of year gives the nice scenic run between
Newcastle and Stranraer via Hexham , the Tyne Valley Line, Dumfries, Kilmarnock, through Troon and Ayr and the scenic rail
journey along the rural branch line through remote mooland to the coastal port. (Just one warning bring some supplies
of food, there is not usually a catering service on the Newcastle-Stranraer train, its a long journey!) At just £39
single its one of the best rail offers going locally.
Travelling back from Belfast try the contrasting route leaving
usually at 08.00 through Armagh, and County Louth to Dublin with some good sea views. Change for the DART electrc train
to Dun Laoghaire and the Ferry to Holyhead. In Wales travelling the scenic rail journey back along the North Wales Coast,
with changes at Chester, Stockport and Doncaster. (Giving the added bonus of a journey back through the Peak District, back
from Doncaster on the through train to the village of Hunmanby at 20.16 Single journey back even less £36.20! (Again
no train catering between Doncaster and Hunmanby)
